Adhesive tapes for the EV industry

What electric vehicle manufacturers and battery pack builders actually buy from a tape maker, why the enquiry starts with a drawing rather than a catalogue number, and where to go next in the Mr.Bond® range.

In short

Lalit Jain Industries Pvt. Ltd. (LJIPL) has manufactured industrial adhesive tapes since 1987, 39 years, and supplies the EV sector under the Mr.Bond® brand. EV buyers do not generally order a tape, they order a solution to a position inside an assembly: an insulation layer on a nickel strip, a heat path between a cell and a casing, a shield around an inverter, a bundling tape on a module. That is why almost every EV enquiry is drawing-led and ends in a custom-slit roll rather than a stock size. The company is ISO 9001:2015 certified, manufactures at two of its own units at Rai, Sonipat (Haryana) and Bawana, Delhi, and is led by directors Mr. Prateek Jain and Mr. Shikhar Jain, Director & EV Business Head. Custom slitting runs from 12 mm to 1200 mm, samples are available on request, and every requirement is quoted individually.

What does the EV sector buy from a tape manufacturer?

Five things, in roughly this order of volume: electrical insulation, thermal management, shielding, structural bonding and bundling, and sealing. The EV battery tapes hub maps each of those jobs to the Mr.Bond® material that does it, with the published specification for each, so this page does not repeat that list. What is worth saying here is how the sector's buying differs from ordinary industrial tape buying.

Why EV enquiries start with a drawing, not a part number

An EV pack designer has already decided the geometry before the tape is chosen. The gap between a cell and the casing is a number in a thermal model. The width of a nickel strip is a number on a drawing. The temperature the assembly reaches is a number from a test. A tape bought off a stock width either fits those numbers or wastes material and labour making it fit.

That is the practical reason custom slitting matters more in this sector than in packaging. Rolls are slit from 12 mm to 1200 mm, and sizes and thicknesses on products such as thermal pads and cotton insulation tape can be customised as per requirements. Send the drawing and the operating conditions, and the grade and the width come back specified against them.

Weight, heat and flame ratings decide the material

Three constraints turn up in nearly every EV specification, and they are the reason the obvious material is often the wrong one.

Weight is budgeted. Insulation is one of the places that budget gets spent, which is why a thin polyimide film is specified for nickel strips instead of thicker sleeving, it insulates without increasing the overall weight of the pack. Heat is continuous rather than occasional, so thermal class matters: Mr.Bond® Polyimide Tape is rated Class 180°C. And flame rating is usually a requirement, not a preference, for anything inside a sealed enclosure, the polyimide tape is supplied in flame-retardant (FR) grade and the thermal pads are UL 94V0 approved.

Who we supply in the sector

Battery pack assemblers and module builders, e-mobility and two- and three-wheeler manufacturers, EV electronics and control-unit assemblers, and the converters and contract manufacturers who supply them. The LJIPL catalogue lists tapes and other products for the EV battery industry, copper foil tapes, nitrile foam tape and thermal conductive tapes among its range, and the wider group portfolio across all four brands is listed at Lalit Jain Industries Pvt. Ltd.

Starting an enquiry

Useful to include: the position in the assembly, the surfaces involved, the width and roll length, the temperature the assembly reaches, the gap for any pad, and any flame rating or thermal conductivity your specification calls for. Samples are available on request. Send it to our engineering team, or start from the pack-level comparison if you would rather see the materials side by side first. For electronics assemblies outside the battery pack, see tapes for the electronics industry.
